Expert manual transmission & clutch repair in South Florida

A manual transmission is tough, but the clutch is a wear item — and how it’s driven in South Florida stop-and-go traffic decides how long it lasts. When the clutch slips, the gears grind, or the shifter won’t engage, real stick-shift experience matters. At Number One Transmissions, we’ve rebuilt manual gearboxes and replaced clutches for three generations.

We handle the whole system: clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, flywheel resurfacing, hydraulics, shifter linkage, and full gearbox rebuilds. Catch a slipping clutch early and it’s a clean job; let it go and it can score the flywheel and cost more.

Signs your clutch or manual transmission needs work

If your vehicle is showing any of these, bring it in for a free diagnosis before a small problem becomes a big one:

Slipping Clutch

RPMs climb but the car doesn’t accelerate, especially uphill or under load — a worn clutch disc.

Grinding Gears

A grind going into gear points to worn synchros, a dragging clutch, or low gear oil.

Won’t Go Into Gear

A pedal that won’t engage a gear usually means a hydraulic (master/slave) or clutch failure.

Chatter or Shudder

Shaking as you release the clutch can be a glazed disc, oil contamination, or a worn flywheel.

Hard or Notchy Shifting

Stiff, notchy shifts point to synchros, linkage, or fluid that’s past its life.

Noise in Neutral

A rumble in neutral that quiets when you press the clutch often means input-shaft or bearing wear.

Manual Transmission & Clutch Repair FAQ

Questions, answered.

How much does a clutch replacement cost?
It depends on the vehicle and whether the flywheel needs resurfacing or the hydraulics need work. We give you a free inspection and an exact written estimate first. Call (954) 535-9393.
How long does a clutch last?
Anywhere from 30,000 to well over 100,000 miles — it depends far more on how (and where) it’s driven than on age. Heavy stop-and-go traffic and towing wear a clutch faster.
Why are my gears grinding?
Grinding usually means worn synchronizers, a clutch that isn’t fully disengaging, or low/old gear oil. A quick inspection tells us which — and catching it early keeps it affordable.
Do you resurface the flywheel?
Yes — when a flywheel is glazed or scored we resurface or replace it as part of a proper clutch job, so the new clutch grabs correctly and lasts.
Do you work on performance and swapped manuals?
Yes. We build and repair manual transmissions for performance cars, trucks, and engine swaps — see our performance builds.
